Release: The Odd Couple
Label: ???
Designer: Siggi Eggertson
Release Date: April 2008

Haven’t actually seen the design credit but am 100% positive that this is Siggi Eggertson’s work. I’ve been a fan of Siggi’s for some time now and it’s always exciting to see others find him and his work. Given the amount of artwork floating around for Gnarls’ first album I have no idea if the is the actual cover design… one could hope. I have to thank Alex at Pink Ring for bringing this to my attention.

I love the excitement of waiting for a young band’s second album or in this case first full-length. Admittedly the results often time vary, but for a little while we wait and wonder if they can build off what they’ve done previously. I, myself start to stress over the creative process as if i were one of the members trying to figure out what would work next creatively. And then there’s the artwork, this band might only have one visual element associated with its name until this point. This of course sends me right back into my mode of trying to guess what their process will be. Are the pressures so huge that they will affect what had worked so well previously?

Another example of triangles. I guess We Are wolves adopted this pattern as their own and maybe that part of the visual is meant to represent them?

Design trend - 2007: year of the triangle

header
As I began to look back on 2007 and album/music design one trend became apparent to me, 2007 was the year of the triangle! In an attempt to prove this theory I’ve quickly gathered albums from 2007 that feature the triangle in some way. Enjoy! Continue Reading »

Artist: Secret Mommy
Release: Very Rec
Label: Ache Records
Designer: Bad-Ass Magic (Andy Dixon & Landon Metz)
Release Date: November, 2005

Ran across this today (which wasn’t hard cause i have a framed copy of the LP on my wall) and wanted to share this piece and Andy Dixon with the world (haha). You will definitely hear me talk about Dixon on many more occasions. In my opinion he has to be one of the most underrated graphic designers/artists today. Check out a recent a Secret Mommy video.

Artist: The Depreciation Guild
Release: In Her Gentle Jaws
Label: self-released
Designer: Lucha Design
Release Date: December 1, 2007

Lucha Design continues to do great clean work, although I’m sure my impression of this design is completely biased based on my love for this album (sorry Jay). This minimal design seems to serve it’s purpose well, not only does it reference some of the electronic components of the music it also serves it’s digital only purpose well as being recognizable at any size. Sorry folks couldn’t find a designer listed for this anywhere. You can always count on Glass Candy for a strong, bright (mostly magenta) composition with a distinct iconic 80s throwback feel.

Great use of color on white. I think the thing i like most about this cover design is the type, it’s busy and simple at the same time.

ASCII art from Onasis with the help of Ulysses, which as far as I can tell that means Richard swift with the help of Richard Swift. Or maybe that’s Richard Swift the filmmaker (Onasis) with help from Richard Swift the visual artists (Ulysses). Anyway, this is a reissue of his first album under the IoSaT with all new artwork. Check out Onasis/Ulysses’s video work for War/Unwar
