Designer: Nathaniel Navratil
Release Date: 2008

I like the thick borders and strong purple and beige palette. Makes for a solid illustration. Flame on!

Navratil explains the layout a bit:

For such a heavy band they have some of the most beautiful melodic parts in their songs, which are the most memorable to me. That is the mood I wanted to capture in the album design. Darker, but visually beautiful. With the album title hinting at spirituality I also wanted to show it with the art (hence the girl holding the flame). Says faith but still can be interpreted in many ways.

Release Date: 2008

I like the probably unintended word play on the band name and only seeing half of the picture there. Lots of white space reminds of some of the postmoder/artsy (you know what I mean) late 90s-era layouts. Future Plans Undecided, the Burnt Toast Vinyl version (could not find an image anywhere), springs to mind. Usually they had related or unrelated photos with oversized typography going this way and that. It got played out after a while, but it had its influence.

Release: The Gun Song EP
Label: Alfa Matrix
Designer: ???
Release Date: March 14, 2008

Guns have always been associated with women, especially when a photographer runs out of sports cars and cheesy poses, and because women are required to like guns because they are phallic. Diamond/jewel-studded handguns are a perfect souvenir from Shangri-La.

If you’re some sort of techno artist, this may mean something. Your homework is to connect the two.

Sweet symmetry with a heavy 80’s influence, from the title (Purple Rain fontness), the background (Ride the Lightning), the vinyl, the speakers… Party time, indeed!

Design trend - 2007: year of the triangle

header
As I began to look back on 2007 and album/music design one trend became apparent to me, 2007 was the year of the triangle! In an attempt to prove this theory I’ve quickly gathered albums from 2007 that feature the triangle in some way. Enjoy! Continue Reading »

I like the photo. The weird blackness seems too noticeable for some reason. It’s instinctual to me to want to make it almost a part of the tree instead of straight black. This would catch my eye, though.

Artist: Eisley
Release: Like The Actors EP
Label: Reprise/WEA
Designer: ???
Date: December 18, 2007

Most of Eisley’s other release feature art from band member Sherri Dupree or her father, Boyd, so this kind of caught my eye. She and her father seem to have a high design output that is far more fitting for their sonic output than a promo photo with a logo stuck on it.

Crazy guess, but I think that photo is of Puget Sound? I could be wrong. At first I thought the center figure in which the photo sits was like a primitive hair clipper, but then I realized it’s more likely some sort of analog film object. Can you tell I’m no photography expert?
