Design trend - 2007: year of the triangle

header
As I began to look back on 2007 and album/music design one trend became apparent to me, 2007 was the year of the triangle! In an attempt to prove this theory I’ve quickly gathered albums from 2007 that feature the triangle in some way. Enjoy! Continue Reading »

Slight departure from the previous designs from the full length, but there’s more consistency than variation. Shake hands with the nozzle, kids!

Another amalgamated device similar to their actual album cover, although this one is more conspicuously hybrid in its appearance. This is starting to look like a nice little series of images.

Designer: ???

It’s a great day when the artist, or the artist’s hair, becomes a strong element in the design. In Murs’ case, it’s the strongest: a head of hair in the shape of a malformed spider will steal the show in an cover, unless you put him against something like this…but then you’re just asking for the universe to tear apart and implode.

Artist: Asian Kung-Fu Generation
Release: After Dark
Label: Sony Japan
Designer: Yusuke Nakamura
Release Date: November 13, 2007

I tried to find the lyrics to this single to see if it could shed some light on the meaning of Nakamura’s art here (or vice versa), but all the sites I tried didn’t have them up. This cover is similar to a lot of his other work: psychedelically-influenced with sparse yet smooth, solid colors and selective outlining that hints at some things (the girl’s hoodie) while strongly emphasizing something else (the chicken’s feathers). I like the reinterpretation of the weather vane, but the thematic meaning of the girl as a “remix” of the chicken sparks some curiosity.

[EDIT: 2:49 PM]
Here are the lyrics. They are from the “TV Size” version (shortened mix used as a show intro), but it puts the art in some sort of context. Thanks, Atashi.

Escape during the time when your shadow behind you finishes stretching
Without even minding our wings that have peeled and fallen off, let’s fly

At the street corner, a sweet scent spreads
Faraway, from the other side
There’s a cry that I seem to have heard elsewhere

Riding on the faint hope that the night wind carries
Where can we go?
As if rejecting it, the world shakes
And steals away everything

If it was a dream, then we’ve woken up
But we’re not doing anything still
Advancing into the night

Release Date: October 27, 2007

Can never go wrong with a sky / star theme in my book. The sheer number of stars are a little too fantastical here to me, but it help to kind of push the traingle-circle crop circle pattern into the back. The hybrid Roman-Sanskrit logo is interesting, and painstaking. Hope the designer was well-paid.

This is, I think, a single from hip hop artists Spank Rock and Benny Blanco’s project where they pay tribute to NWA. I couldn’t find much info on this, but I wanted to post this as an example of what not to do in design. I don’t think I need to explain any further, but I will say I would rather have this than the actual album artwork. Ugh.
