Artist: Porcupine Tree
Release: Lightbulb Sun
Label: Snapper UK
Designer: John Foxx
Release Date: May 27, 2008

I like the idea of putting the band name and title over the kid’s face, because the eye is naturally drawn towards eyes and facial features in general. And the fact that most of his face is hidden and holding a smoldering light bulb adds a bit of a story to the whole thing.

Artist: Various (Jeremy Camp, Newsboys)
Release: Creation Festival Live DVD
Label: BEC/EMD
Designer: ???
Release Date: June 27, 2006

This is a bit old for a normal post, but I got an email advertising the release, and I like this design, so here it is. Interesting juxtapositioning of styles: the elaborate title screams Nashville, but the gritty “sunlight” belts out modern rock.

Tool - Vicarious

Artist: Tool
Release: Vicarious DVD
Label: Jive
Designer: Adam Jones or Cam de Leon (?)
Release Date: December 18, 2007

I don’t think this is Cam’s work, because there was some legal issues between him and the band some time ago, and his site hasn’t been updated in years. I don’t think this is Adam’s either because he usually works in sculpture, not graphics. But this is more or less consistent with Tool’s past visuals. Hmm.

Artist: Celine Dion
Release: Taking Chances CD/DVD/Perfume
Label: Sony
Designer: ???
Release Date: December 11, 2007

Normally I wouldn’t post about a Celine Dion cover because they are fairly predictable. This one stands out because it’s the only version of any release of hers that doesn’t feature one of her silly photos. This is a departure from traditional designs from overly famous adult-pop vocalists, which are just glorified press packet photos of the star in question in sales-boosting softcore porn poses. This design, however, isn’t sexy any way you slice it.

Release: Change! CD/DVD
Label: Hopeless/Sub City
Designer: Aaron Marsh / Sons of Nero
Release Date: November 20, 2007

A nice collection of heavy bands, with 5% donated to the Hot Topic Foundation. This CD/DVD artwork has flying octopuses, spiked fish, ghosts and - orange slices? Weird, but it works.

Overall this looks good to me, using subtle colors and that cool diagonal background that all the kids are into these days.

If it weren’t for the bottom left corner and, you know, the DVD logo at the bottom, I would’ve thought this was a flyer. All that’s missing is white white space at the bottom for a promoter to half-legibly scrawl show info with a faded Sharpietm. I think it fits…these are all local indie rock bands, right?

Label: Epic

Release Date: November 27, 2007

I’m into old books, especially the way they look. There’s just something about hard covers, leather binding, glue and that weird kind of Times New Roman font the printers liked to use. While this doesn’t really copy that same aesthetic (and it’s, uh, a DVD), it still has the same appeal: simple font, simple colors, lots o’ white space.

This is pretty unremarkable, but it doesn’t have to be noticeable. The classic Ramones presidential seal and the bold Impact font do the job just fine.

Nice photo, and I like the morse code above the title. Not sure what the blue vector donut in the center is doing or what it’s intended meaning is, but how many other designs make more sense?
