Monday Gutenberg: Dropkick Murphys - The Meanest of Times

A deeper look into art, the way ol’ Jo’ would have wanted it: via HTML and digital photos.

Artist: Dropkick Murphys
Release: The Meanest of Times
Label: Born & Bred
Designer: Joseph Gloosian (design), John Cohan (photography), Kerry Brett Hurley (photography), Pete McPhee (illustrations), Chris Rioux (digital design)
Release Date: September 18, 2007

I sincerely thought I covered this design before in a non-Gutenberg post, but all signs seem to point to “obviously not”. I doubt that seeing an image of just the cover would not have looked compelling. But seeing the foil stamping and being able to feel the texture of everything makes for a much better experience.

The photos of the kids were taken in the Boston area in front of a Catholic school.

Here’s the guts of the design. The illustrations didn’t do it for me. The strongest part, I think, is the photography. Good thing it was on the cover.

I wish the photos were emphasized more on the insert, but I know how hard it is to fit text in with actual design/artwork.

Rioux was credited with digital layout in the insert, but according to his blog post about it it seems he did some of the photo work. Nice.

Forgot that to mention in the comment on the first entry of the new “Monday Gutenberg” series: Johannes Gutenberg was a German. Makes me a proud man!!!

Heck yes! I’m half German (the other half Italian), but I tend to take after the German part.

You mean half American and one fourth German, one fourth Italian? I’m a bit unsure how you say it in the US so forgimme.

Well, I meant that ethnically I’m half Italian and half German. My nationality is American. I was born in America…when we talk about our ethnicity we don’t really say we’re American even if we’re born here. We usually talk about where our families were before they came here. I don’t know…is that weird? I don’t know how people in other countries talk about their ethnicity.

Actually, I didn’t do any of the design work on the Dropkick Murphy’s album. I did all of the retouching/editing of the cover photograph. I will have to change that on my blog. Thanks for the link to my site!!
