As a general rule, I dislike most magazine covers because they are typographical. White space is no longer defined by the natural space between design elements. Instead, it’s the photo’s background after the press has finished puking text on the paper, clumsily aiming for the bottom and the corners - and we all know how easy it is to sharpshoot with vomit. In an even worse scenario, the innards of the bold magazine logo is the only rest our eyes get, but that territory is usually invaded by a floppy-haired head or a pair of Vic Firths.

This is the convention, though, as the forward facing covers are the prime advertising space for selling the actual content. It’s natural to struggle to catch the eye of music enthusiast; bands are a dime a dozen and if you throw enough of their half-sentence names onto the wall, one or two are bound to stick. It’s aesthetically horrid, but such is the way of the industry’s print journalism.
